England Once More the Center of the Horror World!

For all the sound and fury America has brought to horror, it’s easy to overlook the fact that the good ol’ United Kingdom was once synonymous with our favorite genre. Yep, before Lovecraft and King poured their demons onto the printed page, authors like Shelley and Stoker were making timeless monsters in Frankenstein and Dracula. And before Freddy, Jason and Mr. Myers stalked cinema screens, the modern horror film—in all its bloody full-color glory—was birthed at England’s Hammer Studios. That’s why it’s such a shock to discover that the World Horror Convention, the genre’s biggest literary con, has never been held in the UK, or anywhere else in Europe! Well, as they say, never say never again.

RevCo Revs Up Again!

revco

We last heard from Grammy nominee Al Jourgensen’s industrial sleaze-rock combo Revolting Cocks (also known by the more headline-friendly title RevCo) on the recently-released soundtrack to Wicked Lake (check out the review), which included a new track from their upcoming album Sex-O Olympic-O. Today Uncle Al and the gang formally announced that album’s February 29 release via Al’s own label, 13th Planet Records.

Since the industrial-metal pioneer more or less retired as a touring performer (his flagship act Ministry is now officially disbanded), Al’s also stepped down as RevCo frontman, with most of the main vocals on this project supplied by Josh Bradford… though Al has suggested he may step in from time to time during the promotional tour.

The follow-up to 2006’s Cocked and Loaded will contain 11 tracks with titles like “I’m Not Gay,” “Lewd Ferrigno” and “HookerBot3000” (which we heard previously in Wicked Lake).

More details coming soon at RevCo’s official MySpace.

The Super Bowl has become an American institution, with “the big game” drawing a whopping 97.5 million viewers last year. And while most of those folks watch for their home-team shot at victory and the excuse to stuff their faces full of “scoop” chips we all know that the real draw is in the clever commercials. And film studios are definitely taking advantage. This year, during Super Bowl XLIII, we're looking forward to the trailer for the monster/alien mash up Monsters vs. Aliens, presented in 3D of course.

On Saturday during the Colts vs. Chargers game on NBC, the Super Bowl channel aired previews for the 3D trailer, which will also correspond with a full 3D episode of TV’s Chuck on Super Bowl day!  According to the Associated Press, “Some 150 million 3D glasses will be given away for Super Bowl viewers to watch a 90-second 3D sneak preview of the big-screen animated feature Monsters vs. Aliens.”

13 fear is real

While Sam Raimi is known to genre fans for his cult favorite Evil Dead films and to mainstream audiences for his involvment with the likes of Hercules and Spiderman, as of Wednesday, he’ll be known to the reality TV watching crowd as the producer of 13 - Fear Is Real. A while back, FEARnet production artist Adrian Brattelli and I went to the Philadelphia casting call for the show and as you may have guessed, were not chosen. Unfortunately, you wont see us running through the forest screaming our heads off (unless you’re around the Philly suburbs on Friday nights) but you can instead watch 13 others do the same in this sneak peek on the CWTV website. 13 – Fear Is Real premieres on The CW Wednesday, January 7th 8/7 central.
